Synopsis
In the past as in the present, we want to shed light on the North African community of New Caledonia, inherited from the prison and the deportation of many men, mostly Algerians, to the borders of the Pacific. This land of exile, whose destiny they helped shape, they called it Caledoun. Telling the trajectory of the «Arabs» of New Caledonia is to open the eyes more widely on a whole part of the history of the settlement and construction of the island, in the great plan of French colonizer, from the shores of the Mediterranean to those of the Pacific. To reposition this history for the greatest number, to give voice to the descendants, is to contribute to the missions of education and memory and to promote a peaceful reflection to the New Caledonian citizens. The film Caledoun is therefore not a simple memorial analysis.
It is also a very current reflection on what New Caledonian society is.
